Over 40 Style

The one thing I can never have too many of---blouses and tops! I don't know why, but when I'm out shopping, I never think of shopping for blouses. I have the requisite amount of white button front blouses and black turtlenecks, but whenever I want a "cute" top, I never seem to have one. This selection would be a good start: nothing is too casual, and everything can be paired with jeans or a work skirt.

For me, the biggest challenge to putting outfits together is in finding tops that go with what I'm wearing. Jeans, trousers, jeggings, capris, skirts---it can be tricky to find the right proportions.

Below, is my ideal blouse wardrobe for warmer weather. The tops are in basic silhouettes that are loose enough to keep you cool, and fitted enough to be flattering. All are under $50.

It must be true that the arms are the last to go, because after months (ok, six weeks) of dieting to get ready for summer my shoulders are the only things ready to be shown. Hence my love for halter tops.

(Silly tip that I got from movies geared to teenage boys: if you do push ups before going out, your arms actually do look better, at least for awhile.)

Paired with a black pencil skirt, this top would be great for meetings, or an evening reception. With a looser, lighter colored skirt it would work for daytime events, and worn with capri pants and sandals, it's ideal for travel.
