In looking through the Fall 2011 runway pictures, I was struck by the contrast in the following two pictures. Both are looks from designers I admire (although I guess I can kiss off any free Balceniaga bags coming in the mail now) so it isn't a matter of liking one designer over another.
What struck me was how each of these outfits consist of the same elements and the same color palette: a tunic top, slim pants and a cropped jacket/vest, and obviously both are expensively made. Yet, the one on the right looks so much better than the one on the left. It's a matter of fit, proportion, styling and of course personal taste. This is something that each woman has to decide for herself---I'm sure many people like the first outfit! Which got me thinking about how important it is to develop and trust your own style, and how much easier it is now that I am over 40 to do just that...

When three established designers show red pants for Fall, is it reasonable to call it a trend? It's also interesting to note that the pants are the opposite of the wide-leg look. I'm not sure how flattering this is going to be for those of us with hips and thighs, but at least it's something "new"!

How to wear a wardrobe staple: roll up your khakis, belt them and wear with a tank top. Pair with a denim jacket (roll those cuffs, too). Result? Less soccer mom, more supermodel, just like Heidi Klum.

Wedge pumps are an ideal shoe for women over 40. There is no denying the leg-lengthening and slimming effect of heels, but oftentimes, I'd just as soon wear flats! Wedge heels solve this problem by being (relatively) comfortable enough to wear all day, and low key enough to tone down a form fitting dress or skinny jeans.

She may have worn white yesterday (for her wedding to NBA player Kris Humphries), but in this picture, Kim Kardashian wears an ideal transitional piece; the poncho with of-the-moment ethnic touches.
