I've long ago learned how invaluable having a well-made, well fitting pair of black pants is to my wardrobe. I have black wool pants, black bootcut jeans, black capris, and black jeggings in constant rotation. But there was always something a little...utilitarian...about wearing black pants to a dressy event and I tried to avoid it unless I was travelling and everything had to be multipurpose. Or, going from day-to-evening and couldn't change outfits beforehand. But now, with this pair of slim black cigarette pants in evening-perfect satin, no one can mistake my outfit for officewear.

To minimize that temptation, I always keep a list of the things in my closet that need replacing or things I always wear. This way, one trip to the mall doesn't turn into two when I return my impulse buys.
