How to wear a (faux) leather jacket
posted by Jo Frances on January 27, 2011 10:06 amLeather jackets are one of those clothing items that played such a big sartorial role in my past, it's hard to look at them in a 21st century way. As a child who watched The Fonz on "Happy Days", I still have an impulse to throw both thumbs up and mumble, "aaayyyyy" whenever I see a motorcyle jacket. Then, in the 80s, leather jackets were the domain of punk rock, Euro bands and skinny young men everywhere. Needless to say, now that I'm a mom in my 40s, I could no more see myself wearing a leather jacket for everyday wear than I could see myself rocking leg warmers and headbands at the yoga studio.
But, with some inspiration from younger celebrities like Blake Lively and Rachel Bilson wearing short leather jackets over floaty, feminine tops, I've found a way to update the tunics in my closet. I'm not quite ready to spend hundreds of dollars on this trend, so for now, I'm wading in with some affordable alternatives in faux.

Even with a $290 price tag, the shoes continue to be very difficult to find. In the meantime, here are some alternatives:

posted by Jo Frances on January 22, 2011 10:57 pmThe Matrix sunglasses and severe hairstyle may not work for the rest of us, but the proportions do! A softer jacket in black, paired with a loose, sheer, white blouse is the perfect foil to cropped pants in a unique color.
