Putting together outfits

OK, I know these women are models.  But for those of us who want to develop our own style, seeing how models put together their own outfits is worth a closer look.

You'll always be ready for a night out with these pieces in your closet

posted by Jo Frances on December 30, 2010 12:33 am

The key items in this evening wardrobe are:

1. An evening jacket: a tuxedo jacket, or a sequin blazer.

2. A silk tank: the one shown above is ideal because it's not too bare or too tight.

3. A sexy sweater. Wrap tops are flattering on most women.

4. Evening shoes. Choose a heel height that you can comfortably walk or dance in.

5. Silk Blouse: for more conservative events.

6. Crop pants: worn with heels, this is perfect for a girls night out.

7. Evening bag.

Spring 2011 Trends: Denim

posted by Jo Frances on December 29, 2010 11:20 am

Denim may not be a trend---until it's been upgraded as something more than jeans material.  This fabric has been reworked into trousers, jackets and skirts, and chambray made a strong showing in the Spring collections.

Also new this season were all-denim outfits, a trend that is tricky to carry off, and one perhaps best left to professionals.

Anyway, the higher rise, fuller leg cuts that are available at all price points will make wearing jeans denim seem new again.

High-Low

Sometimes, learning how to identify value is a matter of knowing what a more expensive item looks like.   Below are similar looking shoes.  See if you can spot which one is under $100.

Give up?

Shop your closet

posted by Jo Frances on December 27, 2010 9:06 am

Creating a new outfit from an old favorite can be as easy as rethinking color combinations.  Given a dress like this one, which comes with a black belt, it would be easy to stick to a red/black palette---and changing accessories is going to do very little to change this look.

By rethinking the color combination to a red/camel, however, you can change the look of the dress altogether.  Replace the belt, lighten up the accessories and you can transform this dress from winter to spring, or from day to night.
