A jeans primer - rise

posted by Jo Frances on October 20, 2010 11:32 pm

What is a "rise"?  Well, if you take a pair of jeans, and measure the length from the waistband to the crotch---that is your rise.

Low-rise jeans are from 7” to 8 ½”  inches.  These styles are only flattering to Kate Moss and other women whose stomachs are basically concave. Everyone else will find they are sporting the dreaded muffin top from the front and plumbers crack in the back. Sitting down is not recommended in these jeans.   Neither is eating.

Mid-rise jeans: A rise from 8 ½ ” – 10” inches. Truly, this is the greatest thing since fire. For years, as most of us remember, mass market retailers only sold low cut or high waist jeans. Then about five years ago, this cut became popular, and mature women started buying jeans again.

High-rise jeans: Anything over 10 ½ inches.   Add pleats to the front of these beauties, and you’ve got the dreaded “mom jeans”. Just walk away, my friend, just walk away. Oh sure, movie stars like Jessica Biel or Jessica Alba have been photographed wearing high rise jeans, but they are only doing that to be ironic--- as in, “you are wearing something really ugly and unflattering, yet you somehow manage to still look thin and beautiful…how ironic!”

These are my choices for flattering, realistically priced jeans. I’ve tried all of the styles except the 524s, and I have the Levis 525, as well as the Gap Long and Lean. The 525’s are really comfortable, but they sit just a little bit too high on the waist for my taste. I think they have to cut them this way for the slimming panel in the front, which really does work to flatten the mid section. That said, they’re perfect for soccer games and going to the park.

I have to admit, I didn’t think the Long and Lean would work for my body type, but it does…as long as I buy one size larger than normal. It works because the legs are cut slim, so I can buy something to fit my waist without the legs becoming too saggy or loose. These are sexy jeans, perfect for date night or girls night out.

If someone had told me that I would be wearing Lee jeans ten years ago, I would have laughed...then cried. I still remember them as the shapeless jeans dads used to wear that were sold in a big display against the wall at the local Mervyn’s. The Natural fit boot cuts are flattering, and I’m loving that tummy panel. These would be my favorite jeans (price! fit!) except for the fact that they come in colors that look…cheap. The gray and dark rinse aren’t bad, though.

It's time for a change, and I can't think of a better blogger, or a better subject to kick off the inaugural guest post than Cindy. Her website, Prime Beauty Blog (http://www.primebeautyblog.net) is full of terrific advice and product suggestions focused on women over 40. Welcome, Cindy!

6 Top Beauty Trends for Fall

Hi there, I'm Cindy from Prime Beauty blog, a beauty resource for women 40 and over and I'm thrilled to guest posting for Over 40 Style!

The top beauty trends for Fall may at first glance, seem a bit severe for everyday life, but you can adapt the trends to your lifestyle. Here are a few suggestions: Strong Brows-brows were definitely bold this season whether to frame a smoky eye or to add depth to a natural look. Many times women overlook their brows which is a shame because they really do create a natural frame to draw attention to your eyes. My favorite quick and easy brow product is the IT Cosmetics Brow Power Universal Eyebrow Pencil. The Brow Power Pencil lets you decide how light or dark your brow ‘statement’ will be. Apply slight pressure for a lighter shade and bear down a bit harder for more pigmentation. A handy spoolie is on the other end to tame stray hairs for a sleek look. Ponytails—We’re in luck ladies, ponytails dominated the runways! Messy, sleek and curly 50's ponytails all make an appearance. Although ponytails never really go out of style, they were punched up with ribbons, leather cords, jewels and even colored clip in extensions.

Au Naturale Look –many American designers went for a minimalist makeup look this fall. Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs and Calvin Klein all showed barely there makeup with the focus on glowing skin, soft taupe eyes and rosy-beige lips. You can achieve the entire look with one multi functional palette from Becca Cosmetics. The Becca Avalon palette includes two eye shadows; doeskin and tweed, a cream highlighter in Rose Quartz, a cream blush in Turkish Rose and a black cake eyeliner. All the shades combined make for a pretty, natural and polished look. Turkish Rose cream blush can also be used as a “your lips but better” lip color.

Neutral Nails – while lips take center stage, nails are decidedly neutral. Neutral doesn’t have to mean boring though—shades of grey, beige, khaki and military green are both chic and trendy. If neutral doesn’t appeal to you, metallics in gold, silver, blue and purple are also popular.

Blue Eye Shadow Redo —an update on the smoky eye in shades of navy, royal and sapphire make a statement this Fall. Blue eye shadow conjures up images of the 80’s and I don’t really want to revisit that decade, thank you very much. However, Executive Makeup Director for Estee Lauder, Tom Pecheux just could change my mind. “We got so much of it from the ’60s to the ’80s that it just became comical.” “Blue eye shadow is flattering on nearly everyone—every skin tone, eye color, hair shade,” Pecheux says. Take a look at Pecheux’s Blue Dahlia palette and see what you think.

Dark Lips- the polar opposite of the natural look, dark lips were front and center on runways and impossible to ignore. From deep plum to orange, to vivid red; dark matte lips rule. Even Bobbi Brown, the “you but better” makeup guru churned out the Black Velvet Collection with lip colors such as black cherry, black chocolate and black mahogany. Pair this look with nude eyes and clean skin and remember to exfoliate lips and use a lip pencil for a precise line with no feathering. Photo Credit: Style.com

Will you be trying any of these looks this fall?
