A wardrobe item for "three perfect sweaters" is a little bit like being asked to have the recipes to three perfect cookies---the answers are individual, highly subjective and dependent on how you're feeling that day. But like chocolate chip, sugar and peanut butter (or is it oatmeal?) there are a few classic choices that most can agree on. A cardigan, turtleneck or V-neck and a patterned sweater is a good base for any closet.

posted by Jo Frances on January 2, 2013 8:20 amOK, I see how these three types of rings should be in your wardrobe. It's interesting how clashing patterns and mismatched colors on clothes can look stylish, but inadvertently wearing a stainless-steel watch with a gold ring stands out like a neon sign. The signet ring recommendation? Probably a nod to the timelessness of wearing our initials on jewelry.

posted by Jo Frances on December 29, 2012 12:53 pmAn item on both closet basics lists (for a review, click HERE) is a leather bag. That's it. Just...a leather handbag. So assuming 99% of women already own a bag, in leather or a leather-like material, my guess is that this is supposed to a functional bag. Not the designer bag you show your girlfriends, not the Trader Joe's bag I've been using as a purse this week, not the little clutch you bought for New Year's. But a bag that's sturdy, tasteful and flexible enough to carry year round.
